Murphy must believe that there is a soul hanging around in the delivery room waiting for a baby body to pop out so the soul can pop in. He probably also believes that that slap on the tail knocks the soul into the body.

You have it right. What Murphy is doing is what used to be called a willful denial of God. His soul is in jeopardy.
