The immortal words of Ronald Reagan, sounding very much like Mitt Romney during last year's election. The difference is that in the 1980's, most voters agreed with Reagan, while those wanting big government and the perceived security that comes with it are now the apparent majority. And now those of us who agree with Reagan and Romney are, sadly, the minority, and so we are likely witnessing the ushering in of the end of the republic. As history shows, when the people give the green light to the government to grow and to control without restriction, it does not end well.

In Reagan's case, we had a man with a decades long track record of saying the same thing and acting upon them. To the extent that Romney said ANYTHING that even remotely sounded like Reagan, we knew it was something that they put in his mouth that day for the sole purpose of the campaign.

This idea -- that government was beholden to the people, that it had no other source of power -- is still the newest, most unique idea in all the long history of man's relation to man. This is the issue of this election: Whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether we abandon the American Revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capital can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves.
