Okay, I've thought about it. Saddam would have continued to be an annoyance. That's all he was between 1991-2003, it's hard to believe he'd be more than that. No one was selling him weapons, and the few armorments he had that survived the 1991 war would be even more obsolte in 2010.

We have a BIGGER problem with Iran now. As much of an annoyance as Saddam was, he hemmed in Iranian influence. Now Mahmoud can walk down the streets of Baghdad and get flowers strewn at his feet by his fellow Shi'ites.

One of the less impressive elements of tonight's speech (I'll have a full review up tomorrow morning) was President Obama's clumsy attempt to link the recession with the Iraq war.  Midway through his remarks, Obama lamented the substantial costs of nearly a decade of American war efforts:
Unfortunately, over the last decade, we have not done what is necessary to shore up the foundation of our own prosperity. We have spent over a trillion dollars at war, often financed by borrowing from overseas. This, in turn, has short-changed investments in our own people, and contributed to record deficits.
