The term "Gateway drug" being thrown around is the first clue that the speaker has NO experience with drugs. Most users will self report that nicotine or alcohol was the first drug they used. Those who escalate through the schedules often use marijuana at some point in their journey. The elephant in the room is the massive portion of the using population to whom marijuana is an "endpoint drug". Some people progress that far, calculate the risk/reward, and settle on marijuana to the exclusion of all other drugs.
