Would it still count as unprecedented if the reason they overturn it is to keep the U.S. from crashing into total bankruptcy? That's pretty much a matter of national economic import, but I don't think that's the issue Obama is referring to.

The Supreme Court is not in place to keep the U.S. from crashing into total bankruptcy. The Supreme Court is in place to judge whether the laws passed by congress follow the dictates of the U.S. Constitution.
