Why Do Societies Give Up?

Obama:"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." God isn't addressing the non-believer in that verse. He's directing "my people called by my name" first the Jew, now the Christian. Don't you believe He's powerful enough to to overpower evil in the land if we repent and pray? The problem is that Chrisians are no different from pagan society today. It's not too late!

...from the irresponsible, wasteful worker and gave it to the workers who had put their talents to good use.

What does God expect of us? Not an entitlement society. I wish Barack Obama would read that parable and learn that Godly redistribution is taking from the lazy and giving to the productive.

Equality should be pursued as it pertains to justice, because God is a just God and doesn't want those created in his image to not be treated fairly, ie:can't vote.

The parable Jesus tells about the talents is illuminating, because the master gives each worker a different amount of talents. The master expects each of them to invest the talents and make more. The worker who was given the least buried his talent. When the master returned, he was pleased with the two who made a profit and he punished the worker who buried his talent. The master took the talent away...

C.H. I hear your type argument frequently. Yet, such does not stop me from wondering why during his twenty four years as an adult that Christ ventured into neither Africa nor China... and instead avoided so doing when such was easily possible, What message was He conveying regarding a manufactured modern day concept never communicated by God or Him and also appearing nowhere within the Bible, Torah or Qu-Ran. That manufactured expression as applies to humans is ... "equality".

Why do once-successful societies ossify and decline?

Hundreds of reasons have been adduced for the fall of Rome and the end of the Old Regime in 18th-century France. Reasons run from inflation and excessive spending to resource depletion and enemy invasion, as historians attempt to understand the sudden collapse of the Mycenaeans, the Aztecs and, apparently, the modern Greeks. In literature from Catullus to Edward Gibbon, wealth and leisure -- and who gets the most of both -- more often than poverty and exhaustion implode civilization.

One recurring theme seems consistent in Athenian literature on the eve of the city's takeover...
