As for the desirability of a welfare state, Republicans need to remember that the inaction and apparent indifference displayed by Republican President Herbert Hoover in the face of international economic collapse made the New Deal something of a necessity. Roosevelt accepted that challenge and thereby gained the confidence and support of an American majority. Would that a disciplined society had kept him on a leash so that his political descendants might never have been called upon to administer the mess begun by FDR's predecessors! Perhaps Mr. Sowell's status as a Hoover fellow at Stanford University reflects his own complicity with deceit.

If I understand the gist of this article on Medicare, I find it presumptuous. I am paying for my parents' benefits. My children will pay for mine, and so forth. Why are you saying there will be nothing left when a whole new generation assumes the responsibility every 20 years?
