My grandmother always considered people "on the dole" as lacking moral fiber (not that she would have ever let on). I tend to agree. The inability to hold a job is nearly always the result of a continuing series of bad choices. There's no rational reason why such behavior should be rewarded.

All of us should be on guard against beliefs that flatter ourselves. At the very least, we should check such beliefs against facts.
