Because making a sham of genuine marriage is obviously NOT a need for human society. It serves NO purpose and fulfills nothing.

Yes, and it would increase the stability of same sex couples, and encourage family formation, and improve real-estate values, and many other things that conservatives claim they're in favor of. It's like when conservatives who oppose abortion also oppose birth control or sex ed classes---you find out quickly they're less interested in preventing abortion than they are having the govt control your sex life and convey their view of morality.

Hmmm... if permitting same-sex civil marriage tended to encourage monogamy between gay couples (admittedly a point open to question), that would inhibit the spread of AIDS rather than incresae it.
