According to the book, "Development Across the Lifespan," the United States ranks behind 35 other countries for infant mortality rate(Centers for Disease Control)...It infuriates me when I see a pregnant mother drinking or smoking or starving herself on purpose etc. The medical profession can't really take the blame for mothers who refuse to take care of themselves or the mother's genetics...I had a multiple birth myself, and I took extremely good care of myself, and I still ended up going into labor at 6 months along...I was put on strict bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy, so I was put out of my full time job...my insurance at the time paid one dollar for what would have cost me $80.00 every 4 days for the medicine that was...

The American medical system has the latest technology, the greatest variety of new drugs and unparalleled resources. But anyone who thinks we're getting something great for our dollars inevitably encounters a two-word rebuke: infant mortality.

The United States is the richest nation on Earth, but it comes in 29th in the world in survival rates among babies. This mediocre ranking is supposed to make an irrefutable case for health care reform.
