Direct democracy would be a disaster in this country right now. 90% of our population spent their formative years in a godless, America-hating, left -wing indoctrination camp (otherwise known as a "public" school.) Kids in government schools are taught "what" to think, not "how" to think. 50% of our citizens pay absolutely no federal taxes. Without "skin in the game", they will continue to vote themselves loot from the public treasury. The irony that said treasury is filled only by the labor of their tax-paying neighbors is lost on them. They honestly believe that government money is magic. And why shouldn't they? They've never paid into it. Do you really want to be governed by a mob of non-thinking citizens who are...

When America allows voting by those who have no business being in a voting booth one can expect that such 'voters' will vote for those offering the most freebies (wellfare, foodstamps, etc.). As a result these deficient voters then vote for silly people like Pelosi, Reid, Mikulsky, Frank, Moran, etc. who, like so many others, have no business being 'elected-representatives'. They should all go back to their respective PTA's or 'school-boards' where most started after completing their hippy-day educations.

Had those person who do not pay taxes (nearly 50% of all in America) instead been required to do so and had done so since 1960.. America would still have a huge National Debt along with yearly deficits. These bottom-halfers (those on the bottom half of the intellectual bell curve) can mostly never be fixed and as such.. 'the poor will always be with us'.

You are tripping friend. Everybody pays social security and medicare taxes. Don't you look at your check? Those are federal taxes. So your 50 % don't pay federal taxes statement is incorrect. But i think you already knew that.

No, not really...there are millions of underground employment jobs, notably ILLEGAL aliens.

Even those ILLEGALS who pay into S.S. will get that back EVEN IF they return to Mexico...idiot Dubya signed an agreement to pay ILLEGALS S.S. who had worked here even if they return to Mexico, as many will do after milking us for tax-free income and social welfare burdens for years.

But as to paying regular federal (income) taxes, the I.R.S. reveals that the bottom half of filers by AGI effectively pay no income taxes...this is part of why most blacks support ObamaCare-- they will not have to pay for it, but will benefit from it! another guvment wealth transfer-- just as Obama's new head of Medicare/Medicaid says is the KEY point to ObamaCare:...

A Democratic Republic.
When Ben Franklin walked away, after the form of government was established, some woman asked, 'What kind of government have we'. He answered, 'A Republic, madame, if you can keep it'.

“Do you trust the people?”

We had barely been seated at the restaurant when my guest fired off his query. I had asked him to lunch after a state capitol event, where he was advocating that Minnesota should trade its bicameral legislature for a unicameral, and I had been pitching the idea of establishing statewide initiative and referendum.

He was a little skeptical of initiative and referendum. I was completely certain that without the initiative his idea would never see the light of day.

“No, I don’t trust the people,” I responded. “But I trust the people a whole lot...
