Direct democracy would be a disaster in this country right now.
90% of our population spent their formative years in a godless, America-hating, left -wing indoctrination camp (otherwise known as a "public" school.) Kids in government schools are taught "what" to think, not "how" to think.
50% of our citizens pay absolutely no federal taxes. Without "skin in the game", they will continue to vote themselves loot from the public treasury. The irony that said treasury is filled only by the labor of their tax-paying neighbors is lost on them. They honestly believe that government money is magic. And why shouldn't they? They've never paid into it.
