The High Road Led Straight to Defeat for Romney

I don't see Romney as having lost the election but rather Obama as having won it. The problem was not Romney misteps, but an electorate that was not wise enough to perceive that Obama was not good for their economic self interest. It also seems that the "war on women" narrative was highly successful since that's where the election was lost - women voted for Obama by a 53% - 47% margin. If people are not wise enough to detect a con game, no amount of rational appeals will win their vote. The Democrats can be justifiably proud of their political skills, but their ethics leave much to be desired. It should have been evident from the start that any person with Obama's baggage that got elected was destined to be elected for the second term.

If Election Day is about picking winners, the morning after is for post-mortems. That's when we slice open the losing campaigns, set aside the hundreds of millions of dollars that gush out, and pick apart the cause of death.

Why did the Romney campaign fail? Maybe the country is now GOP-proof. That is, maybe a Constitution-guided, free-market, limited-government candidate no longer can "appeal" to the majority of the electorate. It could be that the death knell rang early this year once 67.3 million of us, or one in five Americans, had come to depend on federal assistance, formerly known as "the dole."
