Speaking as an umpteenth grandson of William Brewster, not to mention the aristocratic Huguenots that founded an important early American settlement of the Hudson Valley, I am glad to know that Dennis. America was always, from the beginning, conceived as a Christian society. It was only after the Great Wave that it was retconned into something quite alien to those of our families that invented America. As for the nature of the United States, well that is a different beast altogether. One must never confuse the State with the Nation and America was self-admittedly Christian, albeit with a practical tolerance. So happy Christmas, Dennis! We all agree that "Peace on earth, goodwill to men" is a grand message of hope for us all.
