YOU forgot to put "income" before tax. It IS true that almost 50% of earners in America pay NO FEDERAL INCOME TAXES... it is possible that a family of four can make over $40,000 a year and pay no federal income taxes. Yes everyone pays FICA ... EVERYONE! you build a straw man about SS taxes not being a "real" tax; only in your mind.

The stock market continues to send a message to Washington that it's not going to tolerate a protracted battle over the fiscal cliff. Memories of the debt ceiling battle, which ironically gave birth to this fiasco, are haunting investors.
