Once upon a time, it was said that to "spare the rod" would "spoil a child." So, for generations, we had children who respected their moms and dads and had a bit of healty awe of them as well. Translate that to the US being a super power and the "walk softly but carry a big stick" exercise. It has worked until now. Now we have the Dr. Spock of presidents who thinks we need a new "approach." This seems to be his answer to everything- a new approach.
