It's been my experience, that University teachings generally run 10 to 20 years behind the private sector. In one case I ran into an assumption made in late 19th century was still commonly taught, and believed by many PHDs, even though it was proven wrong in 1955.

Pretty much the same thing can be said about economics. Most of the PhDs churned out in the field are trained almost exclusively as Keynesians even though it was completely refuted by actual events in 1946 and couldn't possibly survive Hazlitt's analysis printed in 1959.
