The new Republican Congress must stand up to the President...but they won't. That would require courage. Can anybody point to a single thing in the character of John Boehner or Mitch McConnell that would lead any of us to believe they have the foggiest notion what courage is? The fact that they will retain their post in the new Congress is clear evidence that the Republican majorities are preparing to roll over and play dead. Even if they're wrong, at least the Democrats stand for something and they stick together. The Republican Leadership does everything it can to emasculate the part of their base that actually believes something. Boehner and McConnell have misread the results of the last election worse than Obama has. The Democrats are willing to sacrifice principle for political calculation. The Republicans are willing to sacrifice principle for political miscalculation.

Scholar-Athlete Charade

It is not often that I disagree with Dr. Williams, but this is one of those times. He suggests that it's time to end the "scholar/athlete charade" by paying the athletes. Exactly how will that end the charade? By abandoning the fiction that they are students? Dr. Williams' proposed solution doesn't actually solve anything. The way to solve the problem is truly to end the charade. Intercollegiate athletics, especially the big money sports of football and basketball are hopelessly and irredeemably corrupt. They should be abolished. A moment’s sober reflection (which almost never happens when your school’s team is the subject of the conversation) will reveal that intercollegiate athletics adds nothing of any true value to a college education. Spare me your stories about how athletics builds character, teamwork, blah, blah, blah. Do you really think athletics is the only way such things can be learned? Or even the best way? Is it really only your school’s athletes that have any character? Does the rest of the student body not know how to play nicely with other children? Where is it written that America's colleges and universities should be farm teams for the NFL and NBA? That is not, repeat NOT, the purpose of college. Ah, but what would happen to the reputation of your dear old alma mater if it can’t go out there every Saturday afternoon and lose one for the Gipper? Maybe people will start judging colleges on the basis of their graduation and career placement rates instead of their won-lost records. What would be so bad about that?

It was not, in fact, the defection of Arlen Spector on April 29, 2009, that gave the Democrats a 60 vote, fillibuster proof majority in the Senate. It was the July 7, 2009, installation of Al Franken after the Minnesota Supreme Court declared him the winner of the previous November's election.
The world is full of people who read the Bible without understanding it. If you think Jesus opposes all warfare short of the Kingdom consummated, you're one of them. Or don't you know that Jesus is the God of the Old Testament too?
Jeff, are well enough acquainted with Jesus to know what He thinks?
As one who was stationed in Japan for two years, I think this bathroom thing is overblown. In many of the train stations in small towns there was only one bathroom. The men using the urinal faced the wall and the women walked behind them to use the stalls. There was a brief cultural jolt and then I just got used to it. No big deal.
I have no objection to banning flights from west Africa, but anybody who thinks that would actually keep ebola out of the U.S. is living in fantasyland. There was never any chance it wasn't coming here.

Progressives’ Moral Equivalence

Why should anybody apologize for the crusades? Muslims have never apologized for conquering those lands. Why should Christians apologize for trying to take them back?

That is because sheep do not have a general tendency toward rebellion. Children do. In the parable of the lost sheep only one went astray, ninety-nine did not. Children are not sheep.
You are assuming that children have a natural ability to reason. You are wrong. Discipline is the way tha parents teach their children to reason about their behavior. You can certainly distract a toddler, but you certainly cannot reason with her.
