Average citizen? I guess I'm an average citizen and I own an AR15 because I can. I'm a former LEO, retired, a military veteran, degree in Criminal Justice and have a CCW permit. I use my AR15 for varmint hunting as well as self defense should the need ever arise. According to the antis I shouldn't be allowed to own that firearm because I am neither current law enforcement or active duty military & its an ugly black "assault" weapon. Will someone please define for me what exactly is an "assault" weapon, and don't used the tired label that its an "automatic" because fully automatic weapons have been mostly illegal in the US for nearly 40 years unless you possess a very expensive license from the ATFE.

New member of NRA and GOA..don't own a gun..yet...never shot a gun and don't pretend to know too much about them either..but you'd think the whiners of gun control would at least do some research..I did read about ARs not being used for hunting because of its ineffectiveness in killing the animal but hunting rifles get the job done better...of the kid who used his dads AR to ward of an intruder, shot him 5 times and he survived...and apparently some people DO need 10 bullets to take down a criminal...

An assault weapon would be a wearpon used to suppress enemy fire in order better to assault their position. Artillery would be assault weapons in that it would soften the enemy position prior to attack. Mortars would be assault weapons as would grenades. Machine guns would be, also. Fully automatic rifles and those capable of burst fire are used to suppress fire while moving to positions closer to the enemy's position. Semi-automatics, firing one shot for one pull of the trigger, are not appropriate for use in this way.

Definition: The same weapons they use to protect themselves. They are better and more important than us.
