The Founding Fathers weren't opposed to religious symbols displayed on government property. And Congress opens each session with a prayer. There's no such Constitutional "protection" as freedom FROM religion. The Establishment Clause prohibits the government from establishing a state religion like the Church of England (which was "established" by an Act of Parliament and is what prompted the clause). Congress has never tried to "establish" Catholicism, Judaism, Mormonism, Episcopalianism, nor any other "-Ism" as a state church. And so Congress shall not "prohibit the free exercise thereof."

That unit -- the family (mother, father, children) --is a foundation that goes back to the beginning of recorded history. Anthropologists have traced it back even further, to the beginnings of humanity.
