Why is it that the use of a firearm for self-defense is so rarely news? Partly because it's politically incorrect to let it be known that it happens, sure. But it's also got to be common enough that it's the dog-bites-man side of the story, and therefor it's not news.

It also has to do with the fact that in over 98% of defensive gun uses, the gun is never fired, but the intruder is scared off or convinced to pursue an easier mark. If it doesn't bleed, reporters are not all that inclined to waste their precious time covering it. That in addition to the fact that you pointed out: defensive gun uses by law abiding citizens is politically incorrect to most journalists and doesn't agree with their left wing ideology. David Gregory is a case in point.

CNN's Piers Morgan writes that the pro-gun crowd's anger toward him stems from anti-British bias: "This gun debate is an ongoing war of verbal attrition in America -- and I'm just the latest target, the advantage to the gun lobbyists being that I'm British, a breed of human being who burned down the White House in 1814 and had to be forcefully deported en masse, as no American will ever be allowed to forget."
