I think that Mr. Shapiro is not dealing with reality when he states that Romney is not a real conservative. Does he truly believe that any of the other Republican candidates, all viewed by most as true conservatives, would have fared better than Romney. The problem with the Republican party goes deeper than a "pissing" contest as to whom is more conservative. The economic situation should have guaranteed a win by the Republicans, except for an extremely wealthy (and I do not view that as a negative) candidate who seemed out of touch with the common voter, but the albatross of the social (religious zealots) doomed the party's chances. Until that problem is removed, the party stands little chance of regaining the White House in 2016.
Romney supporter here. If Romney does not win, it will be, in my opinion, in great part due to this insistence on so called "values issues" pushed by a Republican Party taken over by religious zealots. Keep the Bible and religion out of politics and focus on the real concerns confronting the country.
