Why the War Party Fears Hagel

It's sad to see Republicans being divided like this. If we don't stand up for Israel, who will? As to the poster who couches this in terms of our deficit and debt, let me remind you that the only thing separating us from Greece right now is our ability to keep borrowing. Why is that? Because we are still seen as the safest place for money in the world. We owe that to a capitalist system ruled by law (which Obama seeks to destroy) and to our military. If we are every to return to a more fiscally prudent path, cutting entitlements, raising taxes both have a role to play, but gutting our military is a sure path to ruin.

We already spend anough on military to match the rest of the world combined. Is that reasonable for a country to do when we are 16 Trillion in the hole?

I have searched the entire Constitution and I have failed to find the clause that makes the US government responsible for Israel. Perhaps you can point it out?

As for "gutting" our military, we can no longer afford to defend our competitors. It makes no sense to borrow money from the Chinese in order to defend Japan and Korea and the rest of the world. Debt is the biggest threat to our nation.

Cut all defense spending and we still are 800 billion short.

If the deficit were approached the way Ron Paul proposed during the nomination you wouldn't have a deficit. Of course this would mean dumping the empire but sooner or later the US will have to relinquish it.

So don't cut it then? How dumb can you be?

Yes. It will likely be beaten just as the Black Sea Fleet was beaten. When the checks don't clear or the dollar is destroyed, the rusty hulks will come home to port and won't even get a proper mothballing.

We can dump it now and be responsible, get our financial house in order, live within our means, and prosper for many years to come. . . .

OR We will dump the empire later when we declare bankruptcy when nobody will lend to us. Part of our expensive empire is our massive military presence abroad and you are a fool if you can't see that. We can't even afford to pay for all the wounded soldiers that come home. What makes Bill Krystol think we can afford any more war.

How about the 75% of Jews who voted for Obama? ; )

"If we don't stand up for Israel, who will?" - shouldn't we stand for US? What is Israel for us? Burden.
In the fortnight since Chuck Hagel's name was floated for secretary of defense, we have witnessed Washington at its worst.

Who is Chuck Hagel?

Born in North Platte, Neb., he was a squad leader in Vietnam, twice wounded, who came home to work in Ronald Reagan's 1980 campaign, was twice elected U.S. senator, and is chairman of the Atlantic Council and co-chair of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board.

To The Weekly Standard's Bill Kristol, however, Hagel is a man "out on the fringes," who has a decade-long record of "hostility to Israel" and is "pro-appeasement-of-Iran."
