Term limits do nothing but undercut democracy and temporally distort accountability. The only hope is to reduce the number of things the US federal government is charged to do. Give all that detritus of food stamps, welfare, social security and health care to the states, or if they choose not to do it, to the citizens. Reducing the size and scope of the federal government is our only hope, albeit apparently a far-fetched one.

You have hit upon one of the most important parts of the solution: federalism.
Though almost forgotten today, it was the idea of the founders that the states be in charge of almost everything (except the mail, defense, disputes, etc.) The states created the federal govt. THEY must reign it in. Switzerland did it. American can.

We are NOT a Democracy. Never have been and never should be! But you are correct that most things the Feds are involved in should be given to the States. If we can at least get to that point of constitutional govt, we will see who chooses to survive and who chooses their own demise by the way they run their state.
