Here's another history lesson - the top marginal income tax rate was ~90% in the 1950s and 1960s. The USA of the 50s and 60s (social issues aside) was probably the closest humanity has come to Utopia in all world history. Rapid growth, fantastic schools, jobs for everyone, affordable housing and technological advancement. It's funny, while no one liked taxes back then they didn't seem to b**** about them as much as people do now, despite the rates being massively lower.
You reap what you sow. 20+ years of demonizing "intellectuals", scientists, and the scientific method itself and we get exactly what we deserve. If only we didn't live in a society that gives no value to science (i.e. allowing creationism to be taught in schools, denying climate change, denying evolution, etc) and gives greater value to fairy tales.
That said, the college staff and students mentioned in the article are beyond stupid. I know there's some value in recording the histories of and doing research into fields which might not attract mainstream interest, but this particular situation is stupid and a waste of money. It distracts from the very good work that Colleges should (and mostly do) do.
So what if 99% of credible scientists say that the universe is 14.6 billion years old and can use a multitude of dating methods to prove so? My pastor (who also doesn't have a degree in physics) says the world is 6000 years old because that's what the Bible says. Dinosaur bones are just a satanic plot! It's such a shame that possibly the greatest nation in Earth's history, which found its success (among other things) through development of new technologies and scientific research, has come to a place where Scientists, Professors and Intellectuals have become demonized and uninformed people who tell others what to think are celebrated. That is the true reason for America's decline.
I think what's really causing this culture of ignorance and lack of critical thinking for oneself is America's championing of faith and gut-instinct over objective observation, fact and critical thinking. So what if 99% of credible scientists fully endorse the theory of evolution and can show repeated examples of objective evidence? My pastor (who incidentally has no background in biological science) told me that we haven't come from monkeys and God created is just as we are! So what if 99% of credible scientists fully endorse the theory that Global Warming exists and can show repeated examples of objective evidence? Rush limbaugh (who incidentally has no background in natural sciences) told me that it doesn't exist!
Not mentioned by anyone: $3USD per gallon of petrol is insanely cheap compared to other first-world nations. Gallon of petrol in England - $8.36USD Gallon of petrol in Australia - $5.73USD Gallon of petrol in Japan -$7.23USD Gallon of petrol in Germany - $8.35USD I know that the United States has a lot of domestic production (compared to other western nations) but that can't completely account for the price difference. I know we've been used to cheap gas for a long time, but $3+ gas is not going to go away and is still ridiculously cheap by international standards. Get some perspective.
I know! It's almost like the bible was inaccurate or something...
What - to invade a 'friendly' nation with military and take bin laden using deadly force? If they had failed he would have been destroyed.
“He receives and reads his PDB every day, and most days when he’s at the White House receives a briefing in person. When necessary he probes the arguments, requests more information or seeks alternate analysis. Sometimes that’s via a written assessment and other times it’s in person.” - Tommy Vietor, NSC Spokesman This article is just another piece of biased 'journalism' that always appears on this website. It is DISHONEST to say that he skipped those meetings without mentioning that he read their written reports EVERY DAY. If the reports indicated something that needed his immediate attention you can bet that a face to face meeting would be called. And remind me again, which President made the successful call to kill Bin Laden?
The reason why Bush II wasn't there is because the GOP are embarrassed at the damage he did to the country and how he is regarded so poorly. Yet Bill would probably win this election if he could run.
