There are a lot of different forces at work in the latest Gaza fighting, so no simplistic answer will be offered. Israel offered the people of Gaza a chance to demostrate what an independent Palestinian state would act like, before inviting one to take up right in the middle of Israel. Gaza quickly fell into civil war with Hamas overthrowing the Palestinian authority. They then proceeded to lob home-made rockets into Israeli boarder cities. I wonder what they expected the Israelis to do? Remember when Sadam Hussian launched Skud missles into Israel and Bush Sr. insisted they not retalliate? Well as the Israelis might say, "Enough is enough" "You want war, we'll give you some". Curiously, you don't see the West Bank Palestinian

A new CNN poll shows only 40 percent of Democrats support Israel's response to Hamas launching repeatedly rockets into their country.

"Although most Americans think the Israeli actions are justified, there are key segments of the public who don't necessarily feel that way," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Only four in ten Democrats think the Israeli actions in Gaza are justified, compared to 74% of Republicans and 59% of independents. Support for Israel's military action is 13 points higher among men than among women, and 15 points higher among older Americans than among younger Americans."
