As noble is you sound neither candidate was threatening to make immediate cuts to entitlements. So, unlike your suggestion, the threat of entitlement cuts were not even a factor (check the exit polls). Mitt Romney was the only one trying to make points by lambasting the President for making cuts now (716 million dollars). Regardless of what you believe neither you or I had any real indication of what Romney would actually do. He stated so many contrary positions that all he was left with was all of the downside of the Consevative label and none of the upside.

Memorandum to the GOP: When running an election campaign it is often valuable to select a nominee who represents the rank and file of the Party. This is how other Parties do it. Perhaps you might get on board.

There was George H.W. Bush, who, while a nice, honorable public servant, won primarily because of the record Reagan established. He lost because the rest of us thought that when he mouthed the words “Read my lips, go to Texas,” he meant “Read my lips, no new taxes.”
