I remember how ecstatic Republicans were after 1994. Then the OKC bombing happened, and we were treated to more finger wagging lectures about "conservative rhetoric" inspired Timothy McVeigh, "conservative rhetoric is toxic speech...we need to be civil"...ad nauseum. Next were lectures that "the GOP needs to be inclusive..." until the powers that be were so afraid of the media that there were few (if any) ideals on which the GOP would stand. The result was the candidacy of Dull Bob Dole in 1996. The Powers that Be in the GOP told the people who wanted the party to put forth SOUND apologetics for CONSERVATIVE principles "thanks for your support, now f**k off, but keep sending your checks to the party". WE MUST STAND FIRM, AND NOT ALLOW...

Democratic spin doctors have set out how their side is going to hold onto a majority in the House. They'll capture four at-risk Republican seats, hold half of the next 30 or so Democratic at-risk seats, and avoid significant losses on target seats lower on the list.

That's one plausible scenario. The shift of opinion away from Democrats so evident in the polls could turn out to be illusory. The widely held assumption that Republicans will turn out in greater numbers than Democrats could prove wrong.
