Professor Maguire is just one example of what has happened to "Catholic" universities across the US. The faculties at such institutions have evolved to something similar to what exists in typical secular institutions of higher learning. In fact, some have crossed over to the point of overtly maintaining a consistent anti-Catholic position on the majority socio/philosophical issues. All that remains that could be identified as Catholic on such campuses are their names. Ironically, the same form of evolution has taken hold of some of the more prestigious universities within or about the Ivy League that originated as mainline Bible colleges and now are hotbeds of anti-Christian activist minds.
It amazes me as to the level of timidity shown by the Catholic Bishops in regard to so-called "catholic' politicians, such as Pelosi and Jerry Brown, who have consistently throughout the years have blatantly defied basic Christian principles and sided with anti-Catholic policies as well as anti-Catholic activists, in their failure to excommunicate as their official duty requires them to do.

America: Land of Free Speech -- Sometimes

Isn't it strange how the crowd who demonstrated for free speech on campus, even if it meant speech on behalf of communism or what was considered then as "filthy" speech, during the 1960s, are now the same gang who impose the restrictions that John Stossel has identified. Credibility is displaced by the double-standard.

No more pensions. They have been proven to be the ruin of many private and public entities. Instead, employers should match paycheck deposits toward retirement funds that provide a large lump sum payment upon retirement for each employee. This gives the retiree more options and frees the company from continually paying for non productive time.

Correct. His chain does well in the Northwest but for some reason the Fred Meyer stores don't do well in California. I do know that where Fred Meyer is located next to or nearby a Costco, Fred Meyer competes well because the comparison shoppers usually favor FM.

There is no need to subsidize the corn growers, especially for ethanol use. Ethanol and other alcohol based fuels can be made from biomass economically due to available technology. For years the public has had to hear the debates about biomass disposal and landfill problems. It's over, use it for making fuel. Instead of parks and highway departments spraying toxic chemicals they should be gathering weeds and overgrowth for the biomass digesters. This is 2011 folks; no more lame excuses please.

I believe in free enterprise where the "market" drives prices of goods and services. However that philosophy holds true within reason. The food merchants are basing their prices according to another market halfway around the globe, not the domestic market. The American consumer should not and must not compete with consumers from another world and concerning " homegrown" produce. Also, may I add, the American consumer has subsidized the food industry for decades....it is time for payback.
The Muslims are not dumb. They caught on to how anti-Christian the liberal courts and attorneys are in America, which has encouraged the Muslims to see how far beyond the ridiculous they could push the envelope.
