I've lived in Massachusetts for most of the last 50 years, and remember reading about the rape and torture following Horton's release. What I never realized, until the Democratic party started complaining about the Bush campaign ad, was that Horton was black.

There may have been pictures of him in the newspapers while his crimes were being discussed, but, if there were, the old low resolution grainy images were such that his race never registered on me.
