I don't trust the historical arguments of anyone who says Rome got its slaves "by conquest". A very few slaves were gotten that way; most were Romans, in debt, who sold themselves (or the children of debtors, for whom being sold for their parents' debt was filial piety). And I'd dearly love to know where she gets this crazy idea that Rome's economy had ever NOT reposed on slavery.
