VERY unusual, in these parts. Dixie Ranch ( Crown-Zellerbach Paper Co ) is some miserable scrub pine and brush that gives miserable a bad name. Growing up in the beautiful woods of Northern Hew England, I wasn't pleased at the prospect of living here. But, as a lifelong outdoorsman, I wasn't going to cut myself off from hunting, fishing, hiking and camping. I just had to Buck Up. BIG Ugly Snakes and all. lolol BTW The fishing sucks here, too. Big Ugly Pre-Historic lookin' fish. Everybody knows the very Best Fish come from Clear Ice Cold Water. Everbuddy except my Cajun Buddies, that is. lololol

That's like the big catfish in the Colorado River near Yuma AZ. Those are some damn big fish. Nice to hook into if you like a fight.

Alligator Gar are ALSO prehistoric. Old folks in Lake Charles talk about catching them on cane poles...fish up to 150 pounds. You do NOT scale these fish; they resemble organic chain mail! You use a hatchet and open them up. One night fishing in Lake Charles for Redfish, I saw something about 150 yards out....ROLL in the water...looked like a capsized 8 ' canoe. BIG GAR!

AWL...having lived in Lake Charles....that prehistoric fish you mention is a 'choupique' . Like a cross between a catfish and a moray eel!
