Another kick in the teeth to the non-unionized middle class (and lower class). I really shouldn't be surprised by this anymore.

I agree that all things being equal, two parent homes are better than single parent homes, but I don't believe woman are saying 'I don't need a man, I have the government'.

A lot of kids seem to be the result of casual encounters in which the people involved didn't use protection.

The optimal solution is abstinence though using protection also works.
I've talked (okay, joked) with a lot of coworkers about Tiger's plight, but I haven't heard any crowing or preening.

I have heard people shrug it off based on the theory that lots of pro athletes cheat on their wives, and I can't say I disagree.

Its not that cheating on one's wife is acceptable (I will never do it) but I've known since I was a child that the simple fact a guy is good at sports doesn't/shouldn't make him a role model because a lot of them seem to have very little discipline off the courts.

The Racism of the Black Community

Citing the opinions of a small handful of people as representative of the thinking of the community is ridiculous (look, I found an author and a comedian that hold the same opinon, clearly they represent the thinking of the majority).

Obama's continuing popularity in the black community isn't all that shocking to those of us old enough to recall that Bill Clinton's numbers among blacks stayed high (blacks consistently vote more Democratic than regular Democrats) and didn't dip much either (they were 91% post-scandal).

*Shrugs* My sense is that Tiger Woods was never all that popular in the black community, but that it had less to do with the race of his wife than the sport he played (he is the Micheal Jordan of golf but...

The Real History of Civil Rights

Opposing health care isn't like opposing slavery. That being said, I don't recall Reid claiming that the Republicans opposed equality, he just said that there were people that did.

Also, as others have noted, things haven't remained unchanging through history (nods towards Lee Atwater and Richard Nixon) though I don't believe that the modern Republican party makes a habit of pandering to racists for votes (I can think of a few questionable ads the Republicans ran, but I can also think of a few questionable ads the Democrats ran).

Liberals seized upon the Bush administration's slowness to react to Katrina as evidence of Bush's racism but Bush overhauled foreign aid (which largely benefits Africa and South America),...
Some people seem to be letting the admittly racist comments of a C list celebrity push them into rash positions.

I don't think race relations in America are perfect, but they are good (I've visited a lot of countries and the US is a lot more relaxed about race than most) and getting better.

Where Feminists Got it Right

I was stationed in Peshawar, Pakistan (where the Taliban sprang from) a decade and a half ago. Guys would throw acid in the faces of woman who said turned down their marriage proposals at least a couple times a month (powerful acid is used to clear out fields after harvest, so there is always a lot of it lying around).

Also, woman who said 'Yes' to marriage proposals were literally burned to death every day because murder was more cost-effective than divorce (multiple wives are permitted, but its not the sort of thing a poor man can afford). If a guy divorces a woman he has to return the dowery her family paid him, if she dies, he gets to keep the money (and if she survived the attack, her testimony alone couldn't convict her...
what's most important for a kid is being raised by a loving mother and father. Its not as if kids raised in an orphanage receive those types of 'details' either.

I tip my hat to any family who adopts a kid of any color.

The Roller Coaster Battle for Marriage

I'm not a proponent of gay marriage, but the marriage crisis (low marriage rate, high divorce rate, lots of kids born or being raised outside of marriage) has nothing to do with homosexuality.

The problem is people that have sex/kids with little forethought or sense of committment, enter into marriage lightly, don't take their vows seriously, and leave quickly.

Whether or not guys can marry other guys doesn't even enter into the equation.

The Rise of the Mob Economy

Businesses which take government money to survive and whose execs award promptly award themselves big bonuses (for what?) shouldn't be shocked to hear from the government.

I'd say the best options for businesses which took TARP money are to A) pay back the money ASAP or B) go into bankruptcy (which is where they would have ended up sans gov't intervention).

While I don't feel any sympathy/anger about those who took government money being limited,
I sincerely hope that the administration doesn't seek to impose pay structures on the rest of the business community.

On the flipside, companies which either avoided government entanglements or which paid back the money, shouldn't have their pay dictated to them.
