Gay Marriage and the Limits of Tradition

Opposition to "gay marriage" does not prevent homosexuals from living together, since any adults can live together, with or without sexual relations (except incest), from making whatever financial arrangements they want. The opposition does not need to rely on tradition, which among sexually reproducing animals, goes back millions of years. The birds and the bees, which you should study, mate male to female. "Gay marriage" is ridiculous and dishonest.

A serious problem wherever there are government health programs, like the UK and Ontario, Canada, is that there is no provision for getting more doctors, even to the extent of paying for medical education. That is why there is a shortage of doctors.

Note that Uncle Tom was the Christ-like here of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Unc;e Tom's Cabin, the book that Abraham Lincoln said set off the Civil War! So it is not an insult to be called an "Uncle Tom." Those using the term as derogatory are those following Simon Legree, the cruel overseer.

A fundamental problem is that so many children are growing up without fathers, exacerbated by welfare policies which undermine marriage. Boys without fathers tend to be violent and girls without fathers tend to be promiscuous.

A Not-So-Wise Latina Justice

Justice Sonia Sotomayor should have met Socrates. She is conceited, thinking that she is wise. When the oracle at Delphi said that there was no one wiser than Socrates, Socrates took this as a task to find someone wiser than himself. He asked questions of those supposed to be wise, poets, politicians - like Justice Sotomayor - and craftsmen, and discovered that they were not wise. He was wiser because he knew he was ignorant. Justice Sotomayor should study the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which has been violated by so-called "affirmative action," government-enforced racial disrimination, for a long time.

The High Cost of Liberalism: Part III

(1) The word "liberal" has become a euphemism for "socialist." A liberal is one who values liberty - see John Stuart Mill, On Liberty. Socialism is not concerned with liberty. (2) On inequality of possessions: See David Hume, An Inquiry Into the Principles of Morals, On Justice. He discusses different theories about what justice is, including the theory that it is equality of possession - and he shows how wrong that is. John Rawls, A Theory of Justice, uses as its fundamental principle, the principle of ignorance - justice is what you would choose if you were behind a veil of ignorance. He should have read Plato about the importance of the search for wisdom and NOT hiding behind a veil of ignorance, and he should have read David Hume. (No doubt he read them, but his views about the importance of being ignorant show that an ignoramus he was.)

The welfare system undermines families by not giving assistance to those with husbands or fathers. The enticements of welfare are numerous. The children grow up without fathers, the boys becoming violent teenagers and the girls promiscuous and candidates for welfare!
