In my opinion, assault rifles and like weapons are precisely what the second amendment would protect more than any other gun type, in this modern day and age. In the days of old, flintlock muskets were enough for the citizens to own for thwarting tyranny but now we would need something more modern and powerful to equal what 'they' would have, whoever 'they' might be. Defense against tyranny is the biggest reason the founders created the 2nd amendment. The primary object of the amendment was to deter a tyrant from taking over in the first place, not so much to regain control after one took over. It's all about prevention and being a threat to give power-hungry types second thoughts.

Secondarily, it would be for an 'after the fact' scenario to retake the government if a despot did get into power somehow. But hordes of people armed with grandpa's old 10 gauge goose gun style weapon or even your dad's 30.30 deer rifle would hardy intimidate a would-be dictator. Jefferson also cited basic self-defense from crime as a reason for needing the 2nd amendment.

Paging CNN host Piers Morgan. A new Rasmussen Report shows an overwhelming majority of Americans believe the Second Amendment and gun rights are necessary to protect against tyranny.

Two-out-of-three Americans recognize that their constitutional right to own a gun was intended to ensure their freedom.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 65% of American Adults think the purpose of the Second Amendment is to make sure that people are able to protect themselves from tyranny. Only 17% disagree, while another 18% are not sure.
