It was a GOP congress that gave us budget surpluses from 1998 through 2001. This was done by cutting spending. The Clinton tax increases gave us the recession of 1999. The idea that higher tax rates produced surpluses is not only laughable but disingenuous.

A slight problem here...as a consumer, I might want or prefer a burger (and am willing to pay for it) from one of these low paid burger flippers whereas there isn't much that government (with all of its highly educated bureaucrats) has that I want to pay for. Outside of entitlements, is there any service provided by Uncle Sam that is in high demand?

Then you are saying it is better to support BHO and the Dems who have given us $6 trillion in national debt in 6 years and are about to implement a statist government that dwarfs the Europeans? Who would have thought that most of our problems came from the Republicans?

WTH does missle defense for the EU, Afghanistan or Nato have to do with the mess that we are in. Bush certainly didn't cause it. Do you realize that almost 60% of the federal budget is for entitlements with a large chunk of the remaining for a growing government bureaucracy that is mostly related to Democrat politics including the housing bubble. The massive debt problem is due to spending related to entitlements and out of control government. The only tax reform should be simplification and going to a flat tax. A VAT tax would be suicidal.
