It sure as heck does meant something when a politician deliberately alienates those he MUST have vote for him in order to retain office. I might have doubts over whether some of these people who say they will never vote for him actually hold to it- but demoralizing the base of your own party very rarely leads to electoral success. Which is probably why YOU are standing up for him. You are getting the outcome you want.
