Nor did he invent electricity. That's like saying Sir Isaac Newton "invented" gravity, or Charles Darwin "invented" natural selection.

It depends on the school and the department. Especially in math and science (not social science, but biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, etc.) and business departments, you are pretty likely to find conservatives or at least moderates. And plenty of academics have worked in "real" jobs, whatever that means.

Actually, administrators above the level of a department head have much larger salaries than even tenured full professors. I am an associate prof with tenure (at a small, four-year public college) and still have to work an extra part-time job just to make ends meet. Adjunct faculty earn a pittance and often work without benefits. It isn't just the size of administrator salaries that has grown, it is the number of administrators that even small colleges have nowadays. Another reason college costs so much is the higher standard of amenities expected by today's students. Higher education has become an utter waste of time and money due in large part to the fallacy that students are customers. This holds just as true at small colleges that claim to emphasize teaching as it does at large universities--perhaps more so.
