An Open Letter to my Black Evangelical Friends

The Republican party freed the slaves, and led the fight for civil rights, etc..... MLK was a Republican. The Democrat party was the party of slavery, Jim Crow laws, Bull Conner and the KKK. Today's blacks are incredibly uninformed about history.

I agree annfan and wmou. The republican image is almost irreparably tarnished in the minority community, and yet there doesn't seem to be any basis for it at all. The only thing I can think of that republicans have done is opposed affirmative action, but how can anyone think that institutionalized racism is the solution to racism? I know of many "colorblind" people who have become racist after seeing a lesser qualified person advance over another solely due to race.

I am not writing this letter to accuse but rather to advance understanding. And even though I am white, I am not writing as an outsider but as a fellow evangelical, part of the same spiritual family. May I pose some candid questions?

Are you guilty, on any level, of blind allegiance to the Democratic party? And, on Election Day, did any of you compromise your convictions out of racial solidarity?

I have been very open in my criticism of white evangelicals, pointing out how we often put our trust in the Republican party and how we look to the latest...
