Part 1: I am an old lady now but until I started having heart attacks I worked 50 hours a week at my "day" job and then ran a farm when I got home. We had horses and riding lessons, dairy cows and chickens for milk and eggs (we are vegetarians) and plenty of ducks and cats and dogs and whatever anybody showed up with looking for a home. My son and I did not have video games to escape from reality. We did have literature and we read most evenings. His wife is not quite as physically busy as my son is but she is a wonderful mother and well loved by all. She too was not raised with video games. The grandchildrena do use the computer for entertainment but only with supervision and the time online comes out of TV time.

A piece this week on the portion of Americans working in their prime received a lot of attention, but the fact of the matter is that this is a trend that has gone turbo over the last few years. The author noted that the participation has declined to 75.7% for 25-54 year olds down from pre-recession level of 80%. These are people that have simply dropped out of the job market. While it skews the unemployment rate to a more flattering number, it has a truly devastating impact on the economy and on the individuals that find the sofa more appealing...
