The effect has been observed many times over -- countries that legalize abortion enjoy a decrease in crime about 20 years later. Dubner and Levitt's "Freakonomics" presents the case with proper attribution. That doesn't affect the morality of abortion one bit, however. If you feel that abortion is inherently amoral, then you're unlikely to be persuaded to tolerate it by the fact that it probably reduces crime. Far more interesting is this: why does Ms. Charen avoid the issue entirely? Certainly, as an informed journalist, she's aware of the research. I would have to think she must be either afraid or intellectually dishonest. That's pretty unfortunate, since what we need now more than ever is prominent conservatives who can be honest...
Do the math: 1973 + 18 = 1991. Roe v. Wade might have been a judicial travesty, but there's no denying that unwanted kids are prone to become criminals.
