When you find yourself in a HOLE, the 1st step is to STOP DIGGING! The next step is: GET YOURSELF OUT OF THE HOLE! These two wars were BOTH MONUMENTAL STRATEGIC BLUNDERS, based on a COMPLETE MISUNDERSTANDING of middle eastern history, Islamic culture, religion, and geo-politics. We have bled white our treasury and men in a MONUMENTAL FOLLY of attempting to 'build' western-style democracies on shifting and treacherous Moslem sand. Was David Petraeus as great a general as the write-ups of his downfall routinely claim? This is a provocative question that I will begin to answer with another question: Did America prevail in the Iraq War? I suspect few would say "yes" and believe it, which is no reflection on the valor and sacrifice of the American and allied troops who fought there.
