In response to:

Judgment vs. Judgmentalism

Cal,

I have been a fan of yours for years.... but, after reading your 'eulogy' for Ted Kennedy the other day, I had to 'bit my tongue' HARD to avoid firing off a comment to you, like probably the dozens or hundreds you have already received. Your column today brought me up short, and reminded me what this thing called 'faith' is all about. When Jesus said "love your enemies", He REALLY meant it, didn't He? When He said, "there is NONE righteous but God", He REALLY meant it... I am going to stand someday before the same judgement bar that Ted Kennedy has now faced; as are you, and everyone of those letter writers. Thanks for a little reminder what this faith thing is all about...

Opinion columnists, like the rest of humanity, walk a fine line between judgment (holding people accountable to a standard we did not create) and judgmentalness (thinking ourselves morally superior because we haven't committed the acts of others).

Since writing of my friendship with the late Senator Edward Kennedy, I have been flooded with responses. Some have been kind, but many -- perhaps a majority -- have heaped on me the revulsion these writers also heaped on him. Perhaps the unkindest cut of all was the writer who accused me of "going wobbly."
