President Dwight Eisenhower, 4-star general in WW2 and CEO of the Federal government in the 1950's arms race with Russia, gave the American people a wise piece of advice, in his farewell addess in 1961- a piece of advice from an 'insider'- who KNEW what he was talking about- in the Federal government/military 'nexus that, incidentally, was NEVER taken: "Beware the Military Industrial complex". As Republicans take their case to the voters in November about the Obama administration's massive overspending and record debt, they should seriously consider what could be a rare bipartisan objective: cutting defense spending.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates -- a George W. Bush appointee and an Obama holdover -- has announced plans to reduce what he calls the "cumbersome" American military hierarchy.
