When even CNN's David Gergen concedes that the President's speech was nothing new -- and probably not that effective -- there's not that much more to say about it. We heard most of it before, without the newly combative tone that seems more than anything to signal a fair degree of panic.

Not Far Enough -- And Way Too Far
We mostly want to be left alone. The left wants to micromanage, and they make constant proposals to redistribute this or reform that. So typical Republicans are always forced to answer leftist challenges with calls for compromise and bipartisanship, rather than starting from the opening position of "no" and moving on to "hell no." And they are required to do all this in a calm tone, so that they may be better ignored in media accounts of the discussion. In...
