You did not answer:

The Recession started in December 2007.

The Financial Crisis was 15 months later, September 2008.

What happened in 2007 other than the housing situation to cause the recession?

I'll answer my own question. In 2007, Democrats took control of Congress. There was only one significant change in economic policy in 2007. Democrats passed legislation to increase the minimum wage by 40%.

The big hike in the minimum wage caused a major loss of unskilled jobs. Unemployment rates skyrocketed for teenagers and minorities.

Also, many of the low income workers who lost there jobs were the ones who had previously purchased homes with subprime mortgages. They lost their homes to foreclosure. A large number of houses was involved. Ripple effects lead to the Financial Crisis.

Democrats triggered the Great Recession.
