I couldn't wait to leave my parents' house, begin adult life and taste independence. I went to Army BCT at Fort Dix at age 17. By my eighteenth birthday, I had completed AIT. After my enlistment was done, I spent a few months with my parents before I moved into an apartment with a friend while attending college. I never went back to live with my parents again, except for holiday visits when I worked several states away. I'm trying to instill the thirst for independence in my own kids. I would be fine with them taking overseas jobs or follow their fortune in other parts of the country. Life is too short to squat in the nest with M and D.

According to a study released this month by Ohio State University, almost one-third of 25- to 34-year-olds are living at home with their parents. “There are more adult Americans age 34 or younger sleeping in their childhood bedrooms now than at any other time in the past 30 years”. Earlier this week Congressman Paul Ryan had a line in his acceptance speech at the GOP Convention referencing this exact problem. However, not all of these 20-somethings feel that it is a problem. Many say they are happy with their choices.
