Free Trade is a fine thing between regions with a similar standard of living. It does NOT work with countries that pay slave wages and have little or no environmental regulations. It should be obvious to anyone that a country where the average wage is less than a dollar a day isn't going to be clamoring for US produced goods, all they'll be doing is taking manufacturing jobs and shipping the goods back to the USA. The "conservatives" in the Republican party are going to have to give up their dogmatic support of all things "free trade" and be willing to examine whether these deals are actually working out well for the USA.
"It is our generation's task, then, to reignite the true engine of America's economic growth -- a rising, thriving middle class."

So said Barack Obama in his State of the Union.

And for one of his ideas to reignite that engine, Republicans applauded.

"And tonight, I am announcing that we will launch talks on a comprehensive Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with the European Union -- because trade that is free and fair across the Atlantic supports millions of good-paying American jobs."

One wonders if any of those in the hall who rose robotically at the phrase "free and fair" were...
