Over the weekend President and First Lady Obama celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary with a dinner at the Blue Duck Tavern in Georgetown. Mark Silva wrote at The Swamp politics blog that he was troubled “that a simple date at a relatively modestly priced Washington restaurant to celebrate a wedding anniversary - the first for the first couple in the White House - could generate as much venom as it has.” He said it “suggests something deeply troubling about the American mood.”

Some Americans Don't Want to Hear About the First Couple's Big Night Out
I do not once recall hearing how the Reagans or Bushes spent THEIR anniversaries while in office. Nor do I recall ever hearing about 'date nights', or $100.00/lb beef being served as a matter of course for casual evenings while they occupied the White House. Nobody in the press ever called Reagan 'rugged', or George Bush 'down to earth' but Obama's pecs compared to Putin's were worthy of international debate.
I DO recall hearing the uproar over Nancy Reagan ordering new china (gasp!) as though it were the epitomy of living large. Seems I recall plenty of criticism over her fondness for designer gowns, too, as if wearing such weren't...
