Do your books begin on page "0"? "1" is the first number, the beginning. "0" is a cipher that adds value only when put behind another number. Having worked for years in the print vocation, I have never seen any numbered document of any kind start with '0'. Always it is with '1', whether Roman or Arabic.

The decade starts with the number 1. Therefore, next year is the beginning of the new decade, as 2001 was the beginning of this decade.

It was a year in which the dominant cultural story was the sad but eerily almost-predictable drug-addled death of Michael Jackson. But there were a few good moments sprinkled in with the outrageous and the tawdry in 2009. My choices for cultural winners and losers this year:

Winner: Farrah Fawcett. Unlike Jackson, she fought and ultimately lost her battle with cancer with extraordinary grace, faith and dignity.
