Culture Challenge of the Week: "Imperfect" Children

I work 24 hour shifts, three to four days a week, in a level 3 home for developmentally disabled adult women. I have been a DSP for three years. I also have an adult daughter with developmental disablities as a result of a brain tumor and consequent treatment , at the age of five. I think this all qualifies me to share my opinion on the "help" that liberals have given to the disabled. The women I work with are developmentally about 4-10 years old. By law, (laws made by liberal legislators and "enhanced" and enforced by liberal bureacrats) I must treat them as if they are adults. They also have "rights" that infringe on others and sometimes create very serious problems within the home and their workplace or day program. Let me give you...

This is really heart breaking because, it was not all that many years ago that if an adult had the comprehension ability of say a 4 year old, in many situations that "individual" would be treated in many ways, as you would a 4 year old child. And ALL OF THOSE caring for them would be reminded of their comprehension abilities.

Maybe that was not 100% wrong thing to do after all.

There seem to be a lot of people who are looking for someone to guide through life. I don't know why; perhaps they aborted their own children and want to be parents after all.
Instead of taking care of people like the woman you describe who cannot care for herself, or teaching actual children how to be successful in life, they treat everyone like (not very beloved) children.

Nearly every evening, they are there at their neighborhood pool—a father and his nine-year-old son, Michael. The boy’s smile captures attention instantly. You can’t help but be drawn to watch the two of them as they paddle around, dive for rings, and play “Marco Polo.” Michael stands out from the other children in the pool for one reason: He has Down Syndrome.

We’ve become a culture both welcoming and deadly to people with disabilities. On the one hand, the law requires that they have special access to buildings, and employment opportunities, and children with disabilities are mainstreamed in our schools....
